Dos horas después, la tarde se ha ido deslizando con la misma tranquilidad que el resto del día.

La habitación está en calma.

La luz exterior empieza a suavizarse.

Y Kat, tumbada a tu lado, no deja de reírse.

Literalmente.

Cada pocos segundos vuelve a reírse.

Y ya no puedes más.

Y) “Honey, you’re impossible.”

Eso sólo consigue que se ría todavía más.

K) “I know.”

Y) “What is so funny?”

K) “The cramps.”

Y) “The what?”

K) “The little cramps.”

Intenta ponerse seria.

Fracasa.

K) “They tickle.”

Y ahora eres tú quien se ríe.

Y) “That’s not how anyone has ever described muscle soreness.”

K) “Well, that’s how it feels.”

Y) “Of course it does.”

K) “It’s very strange.”

Y) “You’re very strange.”

K) “Fair.”

Durante unos segundos vuelve a quedarse mirando al techo.

Con una sonrisa enorme.

K) “This is really fun.”

La respuesta sale tan sincera que te enternece.

Y) “It is.”

Katherine gira la cabeza hacia ti.

K) “Will we slow down?”

Y te encoges ligeramente de hombros.

Y) “Whenever you want to, honestly.”

Haces una pausa.

Y) “Eleven times in about eighteen hours is already a pretty respectable statistical sample.”

Kat se tapa la cara con ambas manos.

K) “Oh my God.”

Y) “What?”

K) “You turned it into a dataset.”

Y) “I studied computer science.”

K) “You counted.”

Y) “Of course I counted.”

K) “Why?”

Y) “Historical accuracy.”

La carcajada es inmediata.

K) “You’re ridiculous.”

Y) “You’ve mentioned that.”

K) “Repeatedly.”

Y) “And yet here we are.”

K) “And yet here we are.”

Se acerca un poco más y apoya la cabeza sobre tu hombro.

La risa va desapareciendo poco a poco.

Sustituida por esa felicidad tranquila que lleva acompañándola todo el día.

K) “You know what?”

Y) “What?”

K) “I thought growing up was going to be much more complicated.”

Y) “It usually is.”

K) “Maybe.”

Sonríe.

K) “But this part feels surprisingly simple.”

Y) “That’s because we’re not trying to impress anyone.”

K) “That’s true.”

Y) “We’re just living.”

Katherine asiente despacio.

K) “I like living with you.”

La frase sale tan natural que tarda unos segundos en asentarse.

Y entonces sonríes.

Y) “I like living with you too.”

K) “Good.”

Permanece en silencio un momento.

Luego añade:

K) “Also…”

Y) “Hm?”

K) “I’m definitely stealing one of those White House hoodies for you.”

Y) “For me?”

K) “For you.”

Y) “I thought they were terrible.”

K) “They are.”

Y) “Then why?”

K) “Because someday you’re going to be wearing an oversized White House hoodie while making waffles for six children.”

Y) “That’s an oddly specific vision.”

K) “I’ve had a very productive day.”

Y no puedes evitar reírte.

Porque, conociendo a Kat, existe una probabilidad nada despreciable de que lleve razón.

Los famosos “calambres que hacen cosquillas”, según la terminología oficial de Katherine Walker, terminan desapareciendo poco a poco.

Y una vez desaparecen, la energía vuelve inmediatamente.

Lo cual, tratándose de Kat, suele significar que tiene una idea.

K) “Hoodies.”

Y) “Oh no.”

K) “Oh yes.”

Y) “Honey…”

K) “You promised nothing.”

Y) “That’s exactly lo que me preocupa.”

Kat se ríe, se incorpora de la cama y te tira suavemente de la mano.

K) “Come on.”

Y) “Where are we going?”

K) “Shopping.”

Y) “Inside the White House?”

K) “The best kind of shopping.”

Y así acabáis recorriendo algunos despachos y almacenes internos donde se guarda todo el merchandising institucional que se utiliza para invitados, personal y regalos protocolares.

La reacción del personal cuando la hija del Presidente aparece preguntando por sudaderas de la Casa Blanca resulta bastante divertida.

La reacción cuando aparece acompañada por el General Pindado preguntando exactamente lo mismo es todavía mejor.

Unos minutos después tenéis varias cajas abiertas sobre una mesa.

Kat las inspecciona con una seriedad completamente injustificada.

K) “These are perfect.”

Y) “These are objectively terrible.”

K) “Correct.”

Y) “They’re literally white hoodies with a logo.”

K) “Exactly.”

Y) “There is nothing special about them.”

K) “That’s what makes them special.”

Y) “That sentence has committed several crimes against logic.”

K) “And yet I’m winning.”

Eso último resulta difícil de discutir.

Al final, después de varias deliberaciones absolutamente innecesarias, Katherine toma una decisión.

K) “Three hoodies.”

Y) “Three?”

K) “One for you.”

Levanta un dedo.

K) “One for me.”

Segundo dedo.

K) “One for Em.”

Tercer dedo.

Y sonríes inmediatamente.

Y) “Fair.”

K) “And six t-shirts.”

Y) “Six?”

K) “Obviously.”

Y) “Obviously.”

K) “Two each.”

Y) “Naturally.”

La soldado encargada del almacén está haciendo auténticos esfuerzos por mantener la compostura.

Porque la conversación parece desarrollarse como si estuvierais comprando una casa y no unas camisetas.

Finalmente consigue reunirlo todo.

Tres sudaderas.

Seis camisetas.

Todo cuidadosamente doblado.

Kat toma una de las sudaderas y te la coloca sobre los hombros allí mismo.

K) “There.”

Y) “I’m wearing it over a polo.”

K) “I know.”

Y) “I look ridiculous.”

K) “You look adorable.”

Y) “Those are different concepts.”

K) “Not to me.”

La sonrisa que te dedica deja bastante claro que no piensa ceder en ese debate.

Mientras regresáis por los pasillos de la residencia cargando las bolsas, Kat parece absurdamente satisfecha consigo misma.

Y probablemente lo esté.

Porque ha conseguido exactamente lo que quería.

Unas sudaderas bastante mediocres.

Unas camisetas completamente normales.

Y la certeza absoluta de que dentro de unos años habrá fotografías familiares en las que media casa aparecerá llevando merchandising de la Casa Blanca como si fuera la cosa más normal del mundo.

Y, conociéndola, seguramente tenga razón.

A esas alturas del día, recoger a Emily se ha convertido casi en un ritual.

La residencia está siendo exigente.

Mucho.

Pero Emily lleva toda la vida funcionando bien bajo presión, y además parece genuinamente feliz haciendo lo que hace.

Cuando aparece finalmente por las puertas del hospital, todavía con el cansancio normal de una jornada larga, lleva una sonrisa enorme al veros.

Y, por supuesto, las niñas.

Ava en un brazo.

Celeste en el otro.

Las dos con poco más de nueve meses, observando el mundo con esa curiosidad permanente que parece ocuparlas las veinticuatro horas del día.

Kat prácticamente se ilumina.

K) “Em!”

Emily sonríe inmediatamente.

E) “Hey, sweetheart.”

Kat se acerca.

K) “How was today?”

E) “Very good.”

Se inclina para darle un beso rápido.

E) “Wonderful, actually.”

Luego os mira a ambos.

E) “What about you two?”

Kat intercambia una mirada contigo.

Y esa expresión ya hace sospechar a Emily.

K) “Uhm…”

E) “Oh no.”

K) “Very good.”

E) “Katie.”

K) “It appears…”

La sonrisa ya es imposible de ocultar.

K) “…that I’m in my peak fertility period.”

Emily tarda exactamente medio segundo en entender por dónde va la conversación.

Y sonríe.

E) “Oh.”

E) “That’s great.”

K) “Right?”

E) “Absolutely.”

Luego os señala alternativamente.

E) “Did you make good use of it?”

Tú no puedes evitar reírte.

Y) “One could say that.”

Emily estrecha los ojos.

E) “Nacho.”

Y) “What?”

E) “Katie.”

K) “What?”

E) “What did you do?”

Kat intenta parecer inocente.

Fracasa espectacularmente.

K) “Uhm…”

E) “Katie.”

K) “Maybe…”

E) “Katie.”

K) “…eleven times so far.”

Emily parpadea.

Una vez.

Dos.

Y luego rompe a reír.

E) “Katie!”

K) “What?”

E) “You two are amazing.”

K) “Thank you.”

E) “That was not entirely a compliment.”

K) “I wanted to make sure.”

Emily se lleva una mano a la frente.

E) “Honey.”

K) “What?”

E) “You’re going to have muscle soreness for days.”

K) “I know.”

Emily arquea una ceja.

K) “They’re fun.”

E) “They’re what?”

K) “They tickle.”

La expresión de Emily es exactamente la misma que había tenido la tuya horas antes.

E) “They what?”

K) “They tickle.”

E) “That is not how soreness works.”

K) “Apparently it is.”

Y ahora eres tú quien asiente.

Y) “She’s been saying that all afternoon.”

E) “I married a statistician and somehow Katie is still the weird one.”

K) “I choose to take that as a compliment.”

Mientras habláis, Ava ya está estirando los brazos hacia Kat.

Y Celeste hacia ti.

Como si ambas hubieran decidido que el reparto de padres está perfectamente establecido.

Kat toma a Ava inmediatamente.

Con absoluta naturalidad.

Como hace desde hace meses.

Y Ava responde exactamente igual que siempre.

Agarrándose a su ropa y acomodándose contra ella.

Segura.

Feliz.

Como si aquel fuera exactamente su sitio.

Emily observa la escena y sonríe.

Porque ya no hay nada forzado en ella.

Nada provisional.

Nada que explicar.

Simplemente ocurre.

Y Celeste hace exactamente lo mismo contigo unos segundos después.

E) “How were my girls today?”

Ava responde con una serie de sonidos completamente incomprensibles.

Celeste aporta una segunda opinión igual de incomprensible.

K) “I think she said she missed you.”

E) “Did she?”

K) “I’m almost certain.”

Y) “Remarkable linguistic skills.”

E) “They’re gifted.”

Las cuatro os dirigís hacia el coche entre risas.

Emily todavía negando con la cabeza.

Katherine todavía encantada consigo misma.

Las niñas perfectamente felices en brazos.

Y mientras os alejáis del hospital, Emily vuelve a mirar a Kat.

E) “Eleven?”

K) “Eleven.”

E) “Good Lord.”

K) “Peak fertility sounded important.”

Emily se echa a reír otra vez.

Y por la forma en que te mira después, queda claro que va a disfrutar muchísimo burlándose cariñosamente de ambos durante bastante tiempo.

El trayecto de vuelta transcurre con la tranquilidad propia de un viernes por la tarde.

Las niñas están contentas.

Ava parece fascinada por una de las cremalleras de la sudadera nueva de Kat.

Celeste está concentrada en la importantísima tarea de intentar agarrarte una manga.

Emily, por su parte, parece cansada.

Pero feliz.

El tipo de cansancio que aparece después de un buen día.

Y mientras el Suburban avanza hacia Odenton, tú miras hacia ella.

Y) “You’re coming back tomorrow?”

Emily asiente.

E) “Yeah.”

E) “I’m on call.”

Kat hace una pequeña mueca.

E) “A full twenty-four hours.”

E) “Not a ten-hour shift like yesterday and today.”

Y) “Ouch.”

E) “Yep.”

Sonríe.

E) “I go in at eight and I leave at eight on Sunday.”

Luego señala alternativamente a ambos.

E) “And don’t walk me in.”

Katherine arquea una ceja.

K) “Why?”

Emily sonríe.

E) “Because I suspect Katie is going to enjoy having more tickles.”

Kat tarda un segundo en entenderlo.

Luego se tapa la cara.

K) “Em!”

E) “What?”

Y) “She’s got a point.”

K) “Traitors. Both of you.”

Emily se ríe.

Y después os mira.

E) “Are you doing anything tomorrow?”

Tú ni siquiera necesitas pensarlo.

Y) “Couch.”

Kat asiente inmediatamente.

K) “Blanket.”

Y) “The girls.”

K) “The girls.”

Emily sonríe.

Porque la respuesta es exactamente la esperable.

Katherine permanece pensativa unos segundos.

Y entonces recuerda algo.

K) “Can we take them to a park?”

Emily gira la cabeza.

E) “If you ask me for permission one more time…”

K) “No, no.”

Kat levanta las manos.

K) “Not permission.”

K) “I mean if there’s a park nearby.”

Emily se queda mirándola unos segundos.

Luego sonríe.

Porque sigue siendo incapaz de acostumbrarse del todo.

E) “Honey.”

K) “What?”

E) “You live there.”

K) “Technically.”

E) “You’ve been there for months.”

K) “Also technically.”

E) “You know the neighborhood.”

K) “Not nearly as well as you two.”

Y eso sí que hace sonreír a Emily.

Porque entiende perfectamente lo que quiere decir.

No está preguntando permiso.

Está preguntando por costumbre.

Por cariño.

Por esa sensación de estar construyendo una familia en la que todavía encuentra cosas nuevas cada día.

E) “Yes.”

E) “There are several parks.”

Y) “The one near Piney Orchard is nice.”

E) “That’s the one I was thinking about.”

Katherine sonríe inmediatamente.

K) “Then let’s do that.”

Y) “Deal.”

K) “Blanket.”

Y) “Girls.”

K) “Park.”

Y) “Probably snacks.”

K) “Definitely snacks.”

Emily asiente.

E) “Now that sounds like an excellent Saturday.”

Y durante unos segundos nadie dice nada.

Simplemente observáis a Ava y Celeste, que siguen completamente absorbidas por sus respectivas investigaciones científicas sobre cremalleras, mangas y tejidos.

Y entonces Emily sonríe.

E) “You know…”

Y) “What?”

E) “I think the girls are going to have a very nice childhood.”

Kat mira inmediatamente a las niñas.

Luego a vosotros.

Y sonríe.

K) “I think so too.”

Y por la forma en que lo dice, queda claro que no está pensando sólo en ellas.

También está pensando en vosotros.

Emily sonríe mientras observa a Kat.

Porque la conoce demasiado bien.

Y sabe exactamente cuál es la pregunta que acaba de formular sin formularla.

E) “By the way…”

Katherine gira la cabeza.

E) “The difference between a couple of times a day and eleven…”

Emily hace una pausa.

E) “…in terms of conception odds isn’t actually that dramatic.”

Kat escucha atentamente.

Luego se encoge de hombros.

Y sonríe.

K) “Oh.”

E) “Oh?”

K) “It was fun.”

Emily rompe a reír inmediatamente.

K) “I mean it.”

K) “It’s not something we’d subject ourselves to every day.”

Y te mira.

Con esa sonrisa enorme que lleva acompañándola desde la mañana.

K) “But it was fun.”

K) “Really fun.”

Emily ya está negando con la cabeza.

K) “Now I understand why you said putting two little monsters into the world was more fun than taking them out.”

Eso provoca una carcajada inmediata.

E) “See?”

K) “You were right.”

E) “I usually am.”

Y) “Dangerous statement.”

E) “Accurate statement.”

K) “Also accurate.”

Emily sonríe satisfecha.

E) “Pregnancy?”

Señala a las niñas.

E) “Wonderful.”

E) “Childbirth?”

Hace una pequeña mueca.

E) “Worth it.”

K) “But…”

E) “The process beforehand definitely got better reviews.”

Kat se ríe tanto que Ava la mira durante un segundo, intrigada.

Como si intentara entender qué resulta tan gracioso.

Katherine la besa en la cabeza.

K) “Sorry, sweetheart.”

E) “The good news is that you’re both absurdly healthy.”

Y) “That’s reassuring.”

E) “The better news is that you’re both happy.”

K) “Very.”

E) “And the best news is that neither of you seems remotely stressed about it.”

Eso hace que os miréis.

Porque Emily tiene razón.

No hay ansiedad.

No hay obsesión.

No hay sensación de urgencia.

Sólo ilusión.

Y ganas de construir algo juntos.

K) “I think that’s because if it happens, wonderful.”

Emily asiente.

K) “And if it doesn’t…”

Kat te aprieta la mano.

K) “…we’ll try again.”

Y) “That’s pretty much the plan.”

Emily sonríe.

E) “Good.”

Y durante unos segundos contempla la escena.

Kat abrazando a Ava.

Tú sosteniendo a Celeste.

Las niñas perfectamente tranquilas.

Y la sensación de hogar que parece llenar todo el vehículo.

Finalmente Emily apoya la cabeza contra el respaldo.

E) “You know what’s funny?”

Y) “What?”

E) “Yesterday morning Katie was worried about whether she was allowed to wake the girls up.”

Kat se sonroja inmediatamente.

K) “Em…”

E) “And now she’s discussing fertility windows, family planning and Saturday park trips.”

K) “That happened surprisingly fast.”

Y) “To be fair, it was a very productive day.”

E) “That might be the understatement of the century.”

La carcajada que sigue dura varios segundos.

Y mientras el Suburban continúa hacia Odenton, con el sol empezando a caer sobre Maryland, resulta difícil imaginar una forma mejor de terminar aquella semana.

Kat permanece unos segundos en silencio.

Ava sigue acomodada contra ella.

La pequeña ya empieza a cabecear ligeramente, señal inequívoca de que la hora de dormir se acerca.

Y entonces Katherine habla.

No deprisa.

No como quien improvisa.

Sino como alguien que lleva horas pensando en ello.

K) “It’s just…”

Mira a Emily.

Luego a ti.

K) “I’ve been thinking.”

Emily sonríe.

Porque ésa suele ser una frase peligrosa.

K) “If we’re really going to do this…”

K) “And we’re clearly going to do this…”

La sonrisa vuelve a aparecer.

K) “Then we should do it properly.”

Tú la observas.

Y ella continúa.

K) “If we’re going to raise six children together…”

La emoción es evidente en su voz.

No nervios.

No dudas.

Pura ilusión.

K) “Then we’d better be three people doing it.”

Hace una pausa.

Y añade:

K) “Not two plus one.”

Mira primero a Emily.

Luego a ti.

K) “In any configuration.”

El vehículo queda en silencio unos segundos.

Porque todos entienden exactamente lo que acaba de decir.

No está hablando de logística.

Ni de horarios.

Ni de tareas domésticas.

Está hablando de pertenencia.

De familia.

Emily es la primera en responder.

Y la sonrisa que aparece en su cara es extraordinariamente tierna.

E) “Oh, honey…”

Estira una mano y le acaricia suavemente la mejilla.

E) “That’s exactly how it is.”

Kat sonríe.

Pero Emily continúa.

E) “The fact that I probably wouldn’t date you…”

Eso provoca una pequeña risa general.

E) “…doesn’t change any of that.”

Katherine asiente.

Porque lo entiende perfectamente.

E) “Family isn’t measured that way.”

E) “Never was.”

E) “Never will be.”

La voz de Emily se suaviza todavía más.

E) “I’m really happy you figured that out.”

Kat baja la mirada un instante.

Emocionada.

E) “Because that’s what we’ve been trying to tell you since the beginning.”

E) “You weren’t visiting.”

E) “You weren’t auditioning.”

E) “You weren’t on probation.”

Eso arranca una pequeña sonrisa a Kat.

E) “You joined the family.”

Y tú asientes inmediatamente.

Porque ésa ha sido siempre la realidad.

Desde mucho antes de que ella terminara de creérsela.

K) “I know.”

La respuesta llega casi en un susurro.

K) “I think…”

Mira a Ava.

Luego a Celeste.

K) “I think my head understood before my heart did.”

Y) “That sounds familiar.”

Kat sonríe.

Porque sabe exactamente a qué te refieres.

E) “He does that too.”

Y) “Frequently.”

E) “Constantly.”

Las risas regresan.

Suaves.

Familiares.

Y entonces Emily se inclina un poco hacia delante.

E) “For what it’s worth…”

Katherine levanta la vista.

E) “The girls already solved that problem months ago.”

Kat parpadea.

E) “Have you noticed they never seem confused about who belongs?”

Durante unos segundos nadie responde.

Porque es verdad.

Ava no parece tener dudas.

Celeste tampoco.

Las dos simplemente aceptan el mundo tal y como es.

Con una naturalidad que a veces los adultos tardan años en recuperar.

Kat sonríe.

Y aprieta suavemente a Ava contra ella.

K) “They’re smarter than we are.”

E) “Most babies are.”

Y) “That’s statistically difficult to refute.”

Emily se ríe.

Kat también.

Y el coche sigue avanzando hacia casa mientras fuera cae lentamente la tarde.

Hacia una casa donde os esperan una manta, un sofá, dos cunas, tres sudaderas absurdas de la Casa Blanca y una familia que, poco a poco, ya empieza a sentirse completa.

La conversación se vuelve un poco más tranquila después de aquello.

Más íntima.

Más reflexiva.

Kat sigue abrazando a Ava mientras observa distraídamente cómo la pequeña lucha heroicamente contra el sueño.

Y entonces suspira.

K) “It’s just…”

Mira primero a Emily.

Luego a ti.

K) “Somehow I still feel, viscerally, that it’s a little unfair that Nacho isn’t available to you at night.”

El silencio dura apenas un segundo.

Porque Emily responde inmediatamente.

Con la misma calma con la que respondería a una paciente preocupada por algo que no necesita preocuparle.

E) “Nacho isn’t my toy, Kat.”

Katherine sonríe un poco.

Porque sabe que tiene razón.

E) “And in any case…”

Emily deja escapar una pequeña risa cansada.

E) “This year, nights are going to be for sleeping whenever I can.”

Y) “That’s probably true.”

E) “I’ll be lucky if I manage to kiss either of you before falling asleep standing up.”

Eso provoca algunas risas.

Porque todos sabéis que no está exagerando demasiado.

La residencia apenas acaba de empezar.

Emily continúa.

E) “But also…”

Se inclina ligeramente hacia delante.

E) “No.”

Katherine la observa atentamente.

E) “Right now you’re both deeply and chemically in love.”

Kat se sonroja inmediatamente.

Tú también sonríes.

E) “So of course you’re going to monopolize each other without meaning to.”

K) “That sounds bad when you say it like that.”

E) “It’s not bad.”

E) “It’s normal.”

E) “It’s what people do.”

Durante unos segundos observa a ambos.

Y la sonrisa que aparece después es extraordinariamente cálida.

E) “And even then…”

E) “Your first instinct has still been to check on me.”

E) “Both of you.”

E) “To worry about me.”

E) “To kiss me.”

E) “To make sure I’m okay.”

Kat baja la vista.

Porque es verdad.

Y tú tampoco dices nada.

Porque también es verdad.

Emily entonces niega suavemente con la cabeza.

E) “So stop worrying.”

Mira directamente a Kat.

E) “Both of you.”

Y entonces se gira hacia ti.

Y esa mirada de esposa que te conoce demasiado bien aparece inmediatamente.

E) “Because you say it out loud.”

Kat levanta la vista.

Emily vuelve a mirarla.

E) “You’re brave enough to say it.”

Luego vuelve a señalarte con la cabeza.

E) “He’s exactly the same.”

Y) “Em…”

E) “What?”

Y) “I’m right here.”

E) “I know.”

Kat ya está sonriendo.

Porque sabe perfectamente adónde va esto.

E) “Nacho could be happier than he’s ever been.”

E) “His life could be objectively wonderful.”

E) “And he’d still worry.”

K) “She has a point.”

Y) “Traitors.”

Emily vuelve a hablar como si no la hubieras interrumpido.

E) “And he’d still try to solve it himself.”

E) “And he’d still avoid mentioning it because he wouldn’t want us to worry.”

Kat asiente inmediatamente.

K) “That is exactly what he does.”

Y) “In my defense…”

K) “No.”

E) “No.”

Las dos respuestas llegan simultáneamente.

Y eso provoca una carcajada general.

Emily sonríe.

Cansada.

Feliz.

Y profundamente tranquila.

E) “Katie.”

K) “Yeah?”

E) “The fact that you’re worrying about me means you love me.”

Katherine asiente.

E) “The fact that he’s worrying about me means he loves me.”

Ahora te mira a ti.

E) “The fact that you’re both worrying about each other means you’re in love.”

Durante unos segundos nadie responde.

Sólo el sonido suave del coche avanzando por la carretera.

Las niñas casi dormidas.

Y tres adultos que, poco a poco, siguen aprendiendo que construir una familia también implica aprender a confiar en que los demás están bien.

Porque la conoce lo suficiente para saber que ha entendido lo que le está diciendo.

Pero que una parte de ella todavía lo está procesando.

Kat sonríe un poco.

K) “Maybe.”

Emily asiente.

E) “Think about it, Kat.”

Katherine levanta la vista.

E) “Were you upset that you didn’t stay at the White House this afternoon with Nacho?”

La pregunta parece sorprenderla.

K) “No.”

E) “Not even a little?”

K) “Not at all.”

Emily espera.

Y Kat acaba explicándolo.

K) “I wanted…”

Mira brevemente hacia Ava.

Luego hacia Emily.

K) “I wanted to see you.”

La sonrisa de Emily se vuelve inmediata.

K) “And the girls.”

E) “Exactly.”

Kat permanece callada unos segundos.

Emily continúa.

E) “That’s exactly my point.”

E) “You’re treating this like affection is a finite resource.”

Y) “That’s a very lawyer way of looking at it.”

K) “Hey.”

Y) “It is.”

K) “Fair.”

Emily se ríe.

E) “You wanted to see him.”

Kat asiente.

E) “You wanted to see me.”

Vuelve a asentir.

E) “You wanted to see the girls.”

Otra vez.

E) “None of those things competed with each other.”

Katherine permanece pensativa.

Porque la frase parece haber encontrado exactamente el punto que Emily quería señalar.

E) “You didn’t spend the whole afternoon wishing you were somewhere else.”

K) “No.”

E) “You didn’t spend the drive here wishing he wasn’t coming.”

K) “Of course not.”

E) “You didn’t spend lunch wishing I wasn’t part of the family.”

K) “Never.”

Emily sonríe.

E) “Then stop trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist.”

El silencio que sigue es tranquilo.

Kat observa a Ava, que ya está prácticamente dormida.

Luego a Celeste.

Luego a ti.

Y finalmente a Emily.

K) “When you say it like that…”

E) “I know.”

K) “It sounds obvious.”

E) “That’s because it is.”

Tú observas la escena sin intervenir.

Porque Emily está explicándolo mucho mejor de lo que probablemente lo harías tú.

E) “Love isn’t a pie chart.”

K) “That sounds like something Marie would say.”

E) “Marie would use PowerPoint.”

Y) “And three economic indicators.”

K) “And a regression model.”

Las risas vuelven inmediatamente.

Emily asiente.

E) “Exactly.”

Luego vuelve a mirar a Kat.

E) “Honey.”

K) “Yeah?”

E) “You wanted to come get me.”

K) “Of course.”

E) “And I was happy you came.”

La sonrisa de Kat se suaviza.

E) “That’s the whole story.”

Y esta vez, por primera vez desde que comenzó la conversación, parece que realmente la cree.

Porque deja de intentar encontrar el equilibrio perfecto.

Y simplemente se limita a disfrutar de estar exactamente donde quiere estar.

Luego te mira.

Y esa sonrisa vuelve a aparecer.

Y ya sabes exactamente por dónde va.

Y) “You want more tickles.”

Kat rompe a reír inmediatamente.

K) “I want more tickles.”

Emily deja caer la cabeza contra el respaldo.

E) “Oh, God…”

Niega lentamente con la cabeza.

E) “Enjoy yourselves, lovebirds.”

K) “We intend to.”

Luego vuelve a quedarse pensativa.

Y la siguiente pregunta llega con la misma naturalidad que todas las anteriores.

K) “By the way…”

Mira a Emily.

K) “How will we know if it’s yes or no?”

Emily la observa.

K) “Will I just… not bleed?”

Se encoge ligeramente de hombros.

K) “You’re going to laugh at me, but I genuinely don’t know.”

La expresión de Emily se suaviza inmediatamente.

E) “Why would I laugh at you?”

Kat sonríe un poco.

E) “If you never had close girlfriends, that’s not exactly a casual conversation.”

K) “Fair.”

Emily adopta automáticamente su tono de médica.

E) “Are you regular?”

K) “Like a Swiss watch.”

E) “When are you due?”

K) “Monday.”

Piensa un segundo.

K) “Twice in my life it was one day late.”

Emily asiente.

E) “Heavy bleeding?”

K) “Very.”

E) “Okay.”

La respuesta parece tranquilizarla enseguida.

E) “That actually makes things easier.”

Kat la mira con atención.

E) “We’re going to know pretty quickly.”

K) “Really?”

E) “Really.”

E) “If your cycles are that regular and your periods are normally that obvious, you’ll notice.”

Katherine asiente despacio.

Procesando la información.

E) “Now, that doesn’t mean you’ll know immediately.”

K) “Of course.”

E) “But you’ll have a pretty good indication soon enough.”

Kat sonríe.

Y por alguna razón parece más emocionada que nerviosa.

K) “Oh.”

Mira hacia ti.

K) “That’s actually not very far away.”

Y) “No.”

K) “Monday.”

Y) “Monday.”

Durante unos segundos permanece sonriendo para sí misma.

Como alguien que acaba de descubrir que una fecha importante está mucho más cerca de lo que pensaba.

Emily la observa.

Y sonríe también.

Porque reconoce perfectamente esa expresión.

La expresión de alguien que ya está imaginando futuros posibles.

K) “This is exciting.”

E) “It is.”

K) “Terrifying.”

E) “Also that.”

K) “Wonderful.”

E) “Definitely that.”

Kat termina apoyando la cabeza contra tu hombro.

Ava ya completamente dormida en sus brazos.

Y murmura:

K) “I really hope so.”

Emily no responde inmediatamente.

Simplemente sonríe.

Y después de unos segundos dice:

E) “Whatever happens on Monday…”

Kat levanta la vista.

E) “You’re not doing it alone.”

La sonrisa que aparece en la cara de Katherine deja claro que ésa era, probablemente, la única respuesta que realmente necesitaba escuchar.

Kat permanece apoyada contra ti.

La cabeza sobre tu hombro.

Ava completamente dormida en sus brazos.

Y, como suele ocurrir cuando algo le hace ilusión, ya está varios pasos por delante.

K) “And then what?”

Emily sonríe.

K) “If it’s yes?”

Tú ni siquiera necesitas pensarlo.

Y) “I’m going to have to go to some store and buy strange things at absurd hours for several months.”

Kat rompe a reír.

Y) “Or more likely Hart will.”

Desde la parte delantera del vehículo, Lucas levanta la vista.

Y) “Because if I try to go myself, he’ll have a heart attack.”

Hart suspira.

Hale) “Accurate.”

K) “Poor Lucas.”

Y) “It’s literally his job.”

Hale) “I knew what I was signing up for.”

Eso provoca más risas.

Tú continúas.

Y) “You’ll probably have some fairly interesting nausea for about three months.”

K) “Oh.”

Y) “Mostly in the mornings.”

K) “That’s manageable.”

E) “Usually.”

Y) “You’re going to suddenly hate things you used to love.”

K) “That sounds rude.”

Y) “And love things you used to hate.”

K) “That sounds even ruder.”

E) “Also surprisingly common.”

Kat parece escandalizada.

K) “Human biology is ridiculous.”

Y) “You have no idea.”

Y continúas enumerando.

Y) “And you’re going to love me and hate me with extraordinary intensity in intervals of about three minutes.”

Emily ya está sonriendo porque sabe exactamente hacia dónde va esto.

K) “Really?”

Y) “Really.”

Y) “But it won’t matter.”

K) “Why not?”

Y) “Because I’ll kiss you anyway.”

Kat ya se está riendo.

Y) “And then you’ll get annoyed with me.”

K) “Reasonable.”

Y) “And you’ll send me to sleep on the couch.”

Emily interviene inmediatamente.

E) “I only did that once.”

Tú la miras.

Y) “A dozen dozens, more like.”

E) “Nacho.”

Y) “What?”

E) “That is a blatant exaggeration.”

Y) “Maybe.”

K) “Maybe?”

Y) “Okay, definitely.”

Eso consigue arrancar una carcajada general.

Emily termina negando con la cabeza.

Pero la sonrisa sigue ahí.

Y entonces vuelve a mirar a Kat.

Y esta vez la voz se vuelve más suave.

Más seria.

K) “Will I be okay?”

La pregunta no nace del miedo.

Sólo de la incertidumbre.

De estar imaginando algo enorme por primera vez.

Emily responde sin dudar.

E) “Of course.”

Kat la observa.

E) “We’ll be together.”

El silencio que sigue es breve.

Pero importante.

E) “You’ll have me.”

Mira hacia ti.

E) “You’ll have him.”

Luego señala a las pequeñas dormidas.

E) “You’ll have them.”

Katherine baja la vista hacia Ava.

Y sonríe.

E) “You’ll have doctors.”

E) “You’ll have family.”

E) “You’ll have friends.”

La sonrisa de Emily se vuelve cálida.

Firme.

Segura.

E) “And you’ll discover that most of pregnancy is actually a lot less scary than the imagination makes it.”

Kat permanece callada unos segundos.

Procesándolo todo.

Finalmente asiente.

K) “Okay.”

Y te aprieta la mano.

Y luego la de Emily.

Como si quisiera asegurarse de que ambos seguís ahí.

K) “That sounds nice.”

E) “It is.”

Y) “Except for the part where you decide orange juice is the greatest invention in human history and send me looking for it at two in the morning.”

E) “Or watermelon.”

Y) “Or watermelon.”

E) “Or pickles.”

Y) “Or pickles.”

K) “You are both making things up.”

E) “We absolutely are not.”

Y) “Not even slightly.”

Y por la expresión de horror divertido que aparece en la cara de Kat, queda claro que acaba de descubrir que la parte más impredecible del embarazo quizá no sea la biología.

Quizá sean sus propias futuras decisiones.

Kat permanece unos segundos en silencio.

La pregunta parece haberle rondado la cabeza desde hace rato.

Y cuando finalmente la formula, no hay rastro de humor.

Sólo sinceridad.

K) “Oh… and with all of that…”

Te mira.

K) “Will you still love me?”

La respuesta llega tan rápido que prácticamente se pisan las palabras.

Y) “Of course, honey.”

La observas unos segundos.

Y) “You’ll be doing the hardest part of the most beautiful thing we’ll ever do.”

Kat baja ligeramente la mirada.

Y tú continúas.

Y) “But even without that?”

Niega suavemente con la cabeza.

Y) “Of course.”

Y) “Always.”

La sonrisa que aparece en su cara es pequeña.

Emocionada.

Y un poco incrédula.

K) “You’re…”

Hace una pausa.

K) “The first person who’s ever told me something like that.”

No dices nada.

Simplemente te inclinas y la besas suavemente en los labios.

Emily contempla la escena.

Y niega con la cabeza.

E) “Absurdly cute.”

Katherine se ríe.

Pero sigue agarrándote la mano.

Tú también sonríes.

Y) “We’re weird even about this.”

E) “Oh?”

Y) “Most people in our generation still want sex without children.”

K) “That’s true.”

Y) “We’re almost more interested in the children than the sex.”

Katherine abre la boca inmediatamente.

K) “Uh…”

Te señala.

K) “The tickles.”

Y no puedes evitar reírte.

Y) “Yes, Kat.”

Y) “The tickles too.”

K) “Thank you.”

Y) “You’re welcome.”

Emily ya está sonriendo porque sabe exactamente qué viene después.

Y) “But remember that for the tickles we’re talking about roughly two hours.”

Emily gira la cabeza.

E) “Two hours?”

Tú asientes.

E) “The first few times?”

Y) “She has remarkable endurance.”

Kat parece extraordinariamente satisfecha con esa descripción.

K) “Thank you.”

Y) “You’re welcome.”

Luego te encoges ligeramente de hombros.

Y) “To be fair, we’ve been taking things very, very slowly.”

Emily asiente inmediatamente.

E) “Yes.”

La sonrisa se vuelve traviesa.

Cariñosa.

E) “You’ve always been very good at that.”

Ahora eres tú quien se ríe.

Porque conoces perfectamente el significado de la frase.

E) “Honestly, that’s probably why Katie is having such a good experience.”

Katherine se queda pensativa unos segundos.

Luego asiente.

K) “Actually…”

Mira a Emily.

K) “That might be true.”

Y después vuelve a mirarte.

K) “Everything feels easy.”

La frase hace que Emily sonría inmediatamente.

Porque sabe que no está hablando sólo de una cosa.

Está hablando de todo.

De la relación.

De la convivencia.

De las niñas.

De las conversaciones.

De la confianza.

De la sensación de pertenecer.

E) “That’s not an accident, honey.”

K) “No?”

E) “No.”

Emily apoya una mano sobre tu brazo.

E) “He works very hard to make things feel easy.”

La protesta te sale automáticamente.

Y) “Em.”

E) “What?”

Y) “Don’t.”

E) “See?”

Katherine ya está riéndose.

E) “Even now.”

K) “He’s blushing.”

Y) “I am not.”

K) “Honey.”

E) “You absolutely are.”

Las dos intercambian una mirada de complicidad.

Y tú descubres, una vez más, que enfrentarse a agencias federales, al Congreso o a generales de cuatro estrellas es considerablemente más sencillo que enfrentarse a dos mujeres que te conocen demasiado bien.

Como muchas de las de Kat.

Tras varios segundos observando por la ventana.

E) “Hmm?”

K) “At what point do we stop thinking of ourselves as young people and start thinking of ourselves as women and men?”

La pregunta hace que Emily se quede pensativa.

Muy pensativa.

E) “Oof…”

K) “Exactly.”

E) “That’s a hard one.”

Emily se acomoda en el asiento.

E) “Usually marriage.”

Mira hacia ti.

E) “But then again, Nacho and I got married at eighteen.”

Y) “Not exactly representative.”

E) “Not remotely representative.”

Kat asiente.

E) “Sometimes it’s children.”

K) “That makes sense.”

E) “And if not…”

Emily se encoge ligeramente de hombros.

E) “When you stop looking young even though you’re still twenty-five, I guess.”

Eso provoca algunas risas.

K) “That’s a terrible definition.”

E) “I know.”

Y) “Most of adulthood is people improvising definitions.”

K) “That’s not reassuring either.”

Y) “It’s true, though.”

Emily asiente.

E) “Very true.”

Durante unos segundos todos parecen pensarlo.

Finalmente tú intervienes.

Y) “Honestly?”

K) “Yeah?”

Y) “I don’t think it’s one moment.”

K) “No?”

Y) “No.”

Miras a Ava.

Luego a Celeste.

Y) “I felt like a man when I married Emily.”

Y) “And then I felt like a kid again ten minutes later.”

Emily se ríe.

Y) “I felt like an adult when Ava and Cel were born.”

Y) “And then I spent weeks wondering if somebody more qualified should be in charge.”

E) “That’s called parenting.”

Y) “Exactly.”

Kat sonríe.

Y) “I felt like an adult when I became an officer.”

Y) “And then I met colonels.”

K) “Fair.”

Y) “Then generals.”

K) “Also fair.”

Y) “Then the Joint Chiefs.”

E) “And?”

Y) “And they’re basically people.”

Emily rompe a reír.

E) “Careful.”

Y) “You know what I mean.”

Katherine está sonriendo ya.

Y) “I think adulthood is mostly realizing that nobody has everything figured out.”

K) “That’s horrifying.”

Y) “A little.”

E) “But also liberating.”

Kat reflexiona sobre ello.

K) “You know…”

Mira hacia Ava dormida.

K) “This morning I felt like a girl.”

Luego mira a Emily.

K) “This afternoon I felt like a woman.”

Después os mira a ambos.

K) “And right now I feel like something in between.”

Emily sonríe inmediatamente.

E) “That sounds about right.”

K) “Really?”

E) “Honey.”

Emily le acaricia suavemente una rodilla.

E) “Yesterday you became someone’s partner.”

E) “Today you’ve spent the day talking about children.”

E) “You’ve helped make pizza.”

E) “You’ve woken up two babies.”

E) “You’ve argued federal budgeting.”

E) “You’ve had lunch with your parents.”

E) “And you’ve spent half the day worrying about whether you’re doing family correctly.”

Kat se ríe.

Porque es una descripción bastante exacta.

E) “You don’t have to pick one.”

K) “One what?”

E) “Girl or woman.”

Hace una pausa.

E) “You get to be both for a while.”

Eso parece gustarle.

Mucho.

K) “I like that answer.”

Y) “It’s a good answer.”

K) “And you?”

Y) “Me?”

K) “When did you become a man?”

Tú te quedas pensativo unos segundos.

Luego sonríes.

Y) “Honestly?”

K) “Yeah.”

Y) “I still occasionally call adults and then realize they’re younger than me.”

La carcajada de Emily es inmediata.

E) “That is so true.”

Y) “So I may not be the best person to ask.”

K) “Fair enough.”

Y durante unos segundos más las risas llenan el coche mientras Maryland sigue pasando lentamente al otro lado de las ventanas.

Y, por primera vez en mucho tiempo, ninguno de vosotros parece tener ninguna prisa por llegar a ningún sitio.
