La reunión termina finalmente casi una hora después.

Y honestamente…

…cuando salís del Tank, el ambiente es rarísimo.

Porque el JCS parece simultáneamente:

• impresionado,
• esperanzado,
• ligeramente preocupado por vuestra velocidad de crecimiento,
• y emocionalmente adoptándoos a todos un poco.

El CMC literalmente te da un golpe amistoso en el hombro al salir.

CMC) “Don’t start too many federal agencies before lunch, Pindado.”

Y tú respondes automáticamente:

Y) “No promises, sir.”

Kat se ríe inmediatamente.

El CJCS se despide de ella con un: CJCS) “Katherine… genuinely, welcome aboard.”

Y esta vez ya no suena protocolario.

Suena sincero.

Muy sincero.

Kat lo nota perfectamente.

Y probablemente por eso responde con una seriedad mucho más tranquila que antes.

Kat) “Thank you, sir.”

Kat) “…I won’t waste the opportunity.”

Eso provoca una expresión pequeñita en varios Chiefs.

Porque honestamente… nadie cree ya que vaya a hacerlo.

Así que finalmente abandonáis el Tank.

Tú, Kat, Alex, Sarah y Hale caminando por los pasillos del Pentágono mientras media gente intenta discretamente averiguar:

• por qué la hija del presidente va pegada al major general del USIC,
• por qué parece tan feliz,
• y por qué el Joint Chiefs acaba de salir sonriendo.

Y entonces llega el mensaje del CNO.

Que, aparentemente, no hacía falta ir a perseguir al SecNav por media costa este.

Porque el SecNav, sabiendo que queríais hablar con él…

…había tenido la amabilidad de acercarse personalmente al despacho del CNO.

Kat parpadea.

Kat) “That was… suspiciously considerate.”

Hale responde inmediatamente:

Hl) “That means he’s curious.”

Alex añade:

A) “Or terrified.”

Tú niegas con la cabeza sonriendo apenas.

Y) “Mostly curious.”

Y mientras os dirigís hacia el despacho del CNO…

…Kat camina a tu lado ya completamente cómoda dentro del Pentágono.

Con su CAC colgando.

El pin del DoD en la solapa.

Y esa sensación todavía nueva de: I belong here.

Y honestamente…

…todo el edificio parece empezar a asumir exactamente lo mismo.

📅 Martes, 11 de mayo de 2021 | 🕘 11:07 | 📍 Despacho del CNO, Pentágono

Entráis al despacho del CNO todavía arrastrando parte de la energía extrañísima de la reunión anterior.

Y allí está el Secretario de la Marina.

Relajado.

Hablando tranquilamente con el CNO como si hubiera decidido aparecer “casualmente” por allí… lo que probablemente significa exactamente eso.

En cuanto entráis, todos reaccionáis automáticamente.

Y) “Mr. Secretary.”

A) “Mr. Secretary.”

Kat) “Mr. Secretary.”

S) “Mr. Secretary.”

Y el hombre directamente empieza a reírse antes incluso de responder.

SecNav) “Okay, hold on.”

Señala directamente hacia Kat.

SecNav) “You absolutely do not have to say that.”

Kat parpadea un segundo.

Y el SecNav continúa todavía riéndose.

SecNav) “Technically we have the same rank.”

Señala luego hacia vosotros.

SecNav) “And the rest of you don’t either.”

Niega con la cabeza divertido.

SecNav) “If you’re going to be absurdly nice to literally everyone…”

SecNav) “…I refuse to be the one stuck with ceremonial distance.”

El CNO ya está sonriendo porque claramente esperaba exactamente esta reacción.

Y el SecNav remata:

SecNav) “Hell, no chance.”

Eso relaja inmediatamente toda la sala.

Kat sonríe ya bastante más tranquila.

Kat) “Honestly, I’m still adapting to all this.”

SecNav) “Yeah, I noticed.”

Señala su CAC.

SecNav) “You queued for Pentagon visitor processing this morning.”

Alex empieza automáticamente a reírse otra vez.

A) “The colonel in front of her almost died internally.”

Kat se tapa media cara.

Kat) “NOBODY TOLD ME.”

SecNav) “That might be the most reassuring thing I’ve heard all week.”

El CNO señala entonces hacia el sofá de la sala.

CNO) “Sit down before USIC creates another federal agency accidentally.”

Tú respondes inmediatamente:

Y) “To be fair, ICIS was intentional.”

SecNav) “THERE’S ANOTHER ONE?”

Hale, completamente seco:

Hl) “Only one hundred and twenty agents, sir.”

El Secretario os mira unos segundos en absoluto silencio.

Y luego niega lentamente con la cabeza sonriendo.

SecNav) “You people are either going to save this city…”

SecNav) “…or give every senior administrator in Washington a stress-induced aneurysm.”

Kat responde inmediatamente:

Kat) “Ideally both.”

Eso hace que incluso el CNO pierda la compostura riéndose.

Y básicamente… eso hacéis.

Porque aunque todo el mundo en la sala entiende perfectamente que tú eres el comandante militar del USIC…

…también entienden algo igual de evidente.

Kat lleva aquella reunión.

Naturalmente.

Sin imponerse.

Sin necesitar demostrar nada.

Simplemente porque esa parte institucional ya es suya.

Y honestamente… resulta sorprendentemente orgánico verla hacerlo.

Kat saca la tablet, explica el concepto de ICIS, el modelo híbrido, la relación con NCIS, los mecanismos de coordinación, la idea de cultura organizativa compatible con USIC y la necesidad de formar agentes capaces de:

• investigación criminal,
• counterintelligence,
• protección,
• y enlace federal civil.

Y mientras habla, el SecNav la observa con expresión cada vez más entretenida.

Porque sí.

Claramente esperaba una chica brillante.

Pero no esperaba a alguien capaz de entrar en una reunión de alto nivel del DoD y hablar de force structure como si llevara quince años haciéndolo.

Finalmente el Secretario levanta una mano.

SN) “Okay…”

Mira alrededor de la sala.

SN) “Question.”

Señala hacia Kat.

SN) “Why did you bring the others?”

Kat parpadea un segundo.

Como si la pregunta le pareciera rarísima.

Kat) “Oh…”

Se encoge ligeramente de hombros.

Kat) “…we walked out of the Tank together.”

El SecNav ya empieza a sonreír.

Y Kat continúa con absoluta naturalidad:

Kat) “And we go places together.”

Alex asiente inmediatamente como si fuera una explicación perfectamente suficiente.

Kat sigue:

Kat) “When we finish here we’re probably going to go find a coffee shop before heading back to Odenton.”

Silencio.

El Secretario la observa unos segundos.

Luego mira al CNO.

Luego a Hale.

Y finalmente a ti.

SN) “…you people are alarmingly emotionally healthy.”

El CNO responde inmediatamente:

CNO) “We noticed.”

Kat, meanwhile, parece genuinamente confundida por la reacción.

Kat) “What?”

SN) “Most organizations at this level barely tolerate each other outside formal settings.”

Señala vagamente hacia vosotros.

SN) “You sound like a university friend group that accidentally obtained federal authority.”

Alex responde inmediatamente:

A) “That is distressingly accurate.”

El SecNav se ríe otra vez y niega con la cabeza.

SN) “No, seriously.”

Mira hacia ti.

SN) “You’re a major general.”

Luego hacia Kat.

SN) “She’s functionally your civilian counterpart.”

Después hacia Alex y Sarah.

SN) “They’re captains.”

Mira otra vez a todos.

SN) “And yet somehow the vibe in this room is still ‘let’s grab coffee after this.’”

Tú parpadeas un segundo.

Y) “…we like each other?”

Eso hace que el CNO directamente se tape la cara riéndose.

Y Hale murmura desde detrás:

Hl) “Sir, I’ve tried explaining this several times.”

SN) “No no, I understand it intellectually.”

Señala otra vez hacia vosotros.

SN) “I just don’t understand how Washington hasn’t corrupted it yet.”

Y ahí sí.

Ahí la sala queda un segundo más callada.

Porque honestamente…

…esa es la gran pregunta.

Kat sonríe inmediatamente tras la pregunta del SecNav.

Y honestamente… la respuesta sale tan natural que resulta demoledora.

Kat) “Oh…”

Se encoge un poquito de hombros.

Kat) “…because we liked each other before the positions.”

Silencio pequeño.

Y luego añade, completamente divertida:

Kat) “Technically…”

Mira hacia ti y Alex.

Kat) “…thirty-six hours before the positions.”

Eso destruye completamente la poca compostura institucional que quedaba en la sala.

El CNO literalmente deja escapar una carcajada.

El SecNav se queda mirando al vacío unos segundos.

SN) “You are telling me…”

Señala vagamente hacia todos vosotros.

SN) “…that the emotional foundations of a new federal military branch were built in approximately a day and a half?”

Alex levanta una mano.

A) “To be fair, Georgetown runs socially at terminal velocity.”

Sarah asiente tranquilamente.

S) “You either become close friends in forty-eight hours or never again.”

El SecNav niega lentamente con la cabeza, todavía riéndose.

SN) “And somehow you all chose ‘collective federal institution-building.’”

Kat responde inmediatamente:

Kat) “It seemed healthier than lobbying.”

Eso hace que Hale literalmente resople una risa por la nariz.

Y tú, mientras tanto, estás observando a Kat con esa mezcla de orgullo y ternura completamente evidente ya para toda la sala.

Porque está manejando aquello increíblemente bien.

No intentando parecer importante.

No intentando imponerse.

Simplemente siendo ella.

Y eso, precisamente, parece estar conquistando a todo el mundo.

El SecNav finalmente vuelve a ponerse un poco más serio.

Aunque sigue claramente entretenido.

SN) “Alright.”

Mira hacia Kat.

SN) “You have Navy support for the ICIS framework.”

El CNO asiente inmediatamente.

CNO) “NCIS too.”

CNO) “On one condition.”

Kat ladea apenas la cabeza.

Kat) “Which is?”

El CNO sonríe peligrosamente.

CNO) “That at some point you explain to me how the hell you all became this functional.”

Alex responde sin perder un segundo:

A) “Shared trauma, emotional honesty and aggressive friendship.”

Sarah añade suavemente:

S) “Also Nacho keeps feeding people.”

El SecNav señala inmediatamente hacia Sarah.

SN) “That one’s real. Food stabilizes organizations.”

Tú asientes solemnemente.

Y) “Correct.”

Kat sonríe entonces mirando un momento alrededor de la sala.

Y probablemente se da cuenta de algo bastante importante.

Hace apenas unos días… todo aquello habría parecido imposible.

Y ahora está:

• sentada con el CNO y el SecNav,
• diseñando una agencia federal,
• discutiendo doctrina,
• haciendo bromas,
• y hablando de ir a por café después.

Y lo más extraño de todo…

…es que empieza a sentirse completamente normal.

Y así es como, tras acabar la reunión con el SecNav y el CNO…

…os vais a comprar muebles.

Lo que, honestamente, resulta muchísimo más surrealista después de pasar la mañana:

• en el Tank,
• diseñando agencias federales,
• hablando de doctrinas de protección,
• y reformando procesos del IRS.

Pero ahí vais.

Dos Suburbans negros.

USIC PD.

Amy.

Hart.

Alex.

Sarah.

Hale.

Y Kat, que sigue descubriendo pequeñas diferencias entre el USIC y el Secret Service prácticamente cada media hora.

Porque durante todo el trayecto desde el Pentágono la protección ha vuelto a ser la habitual:

• discreta,
• invisible,
• relajada.

Pero en cuanto los vehículos entran en la zona comercial donde está Patriot Home Design…

…la dinámica cambia.

Y cambia muchísimo.

Los agentes empiezan a llevar earpieces visibles.

Las posiciones se vuelven mucho más estructuradas.

Las aperturas de puertas más controladas.

Hart y Amy pasan automáticamente a coordinar movimientos con una precisión muchísimo más parecida al USSS clásico.

Y Kat lo nota al instante.

Kat) “Oh.”

Mira alrededor mientras bajáis del vehículo.

Kat) “…they transformed.”

Amy sonríe apenas.

Amy) “Different environment, ma’am.”

Hart asiente desde el otro lado del acceso.

Hart) “No viable mimicry profile here.”

Kat mira alrededor.

Y efectivamente… tiene sentido.

En:

• Camp David,
• el campus USIC,
• Arlington,
• o zonas federales…

…podíais parecer simplemente: militares, personal federal, gente trabajando.

Aquí no.

Aquí sois:

• una hija de POTUS,
• un major general reconocible,
• varios oficiales jóvenes del servicio más comentado de Washington,
• y Jonathan Hale.

En una tienda de decoración.

No existe manera humana de volver eso “normal”.

Así que USIC PD cambia automáticamente de doctrina: menos invisibilidad, más disuasión.

Y honestamente… Kat parece fascinada observándolo.

Kat) “So this is your high-visibility posture.”

Tú asientes mientras empezáis a caminar hacia la entrada.

Y) “More or less.”

Y) “Public civilian spaces with low behavioral camouflage options.”

Kat sonríe inmediatamente.

Kat) “You people genuinely talk like that all the time.”

Alex responde desde detrás:

A) “You say that like you’re not already doing it too.”

Y es verdad.

Porque Kat ya empieza a hablar como alguien del USIC sin darse cuenta.

Amy abre entonces la puerta principal del local.

Y el caos emocional empieza inmediatamente.

Porque la dueña de Patriot Home Design levanta la vista…

…te reconoce a ti primero…

…y luego a Kat.

Y literalmente se queda congelada unos dos segundos sosteniendo una carpeta decorativa.

Tú sonríes automáticamente.

Y) “Good afternoon.”

Ella parpadea varias veces antes de reaccionar.

Y entonces sonríe muchísimo.

Porque sí.

Reconoce perfectamente a la hija del presidente.

Pero también reconoce algo más.

La misma chica joven que aparece en televisión…

…está entrando riéndose con un grupo de oficiales del DoD para comprar muebles para la casa de al lado.

La dueña sigue unos segundos completamente quieta detrás del mostrador.

Mirándote.

Y luego niega lentamente con la cabeza sonriendo con una mezcla rarísima de orgullo y absoluto desconcierto existencial.

Dueña) “Major General Pindado…”

Se ríe bajito.

Dueña) “…and to think I met you when you were a second lieutenant coming into NCR to work at Meade.”

Eso hace que Kat gire automáticamente la cabeza hacia ti.

Kat) “Wait.”

Te señala inmediatamente.

Kat) “You were furniture-shopping as a second lieutenant?”

La mujer responde antes que tú.

Dueña) “Oh, constantly.”

Tú protestas inmediatamente.

Y) “That sounds misleading.”

Ella te ignora olímpicamente.

Dueña) “He came in here terrified because he had just moved from Texas…”

Alex ya empieza a reírse porque puede imaginarlo perfectamente.

La dueña continúa:

Dueña) “…with exactly three useful possessions, one mattress, two folding chairs…”

Te señala.

Dueña) “…and the emotional energy of a golden retriever who had accidentally joined federal cyber operations.”

Kat directamente se dobla riéndose.

Kat) “OH MY GOD.”

La mujer sigue ya completamente encantada de destruir tu dignidad.

Dueña) “He spent forty minutes apologizing for not understanding interior design…”

Y tú murmuras:

Y) “In my defense, I still don’t.”

Dueña) “…and another twenty asking whether buying a couch counted as irresponsible financial behavior.”

El SecNav habría disfrutado muchísimo esta conversación.

Alex ya está apoyada contra una pared riéndose.

A) “This tracks perfectly.”

La dueña entonces sonríe con muchísima ternura.

Dueña) “But he was so excited.”

Mira a Kat.

Dueña) “Because he kept talking about his wife.”

Eso sí te deja callado un segundo.

La mujer continúa:

Dueña) “‘Emily likes warm colors.’”

“‘Emily deserves a real kitchen.’”

“‘Emily’s going to start med school someday.’”

Y luego sonríe todavía más.

Dueña) “You could tell immediately that boy was building a home, not decorating a house.”

Silencio pequeño.

Muy suave.

Porque incluso Kat se emociona un poco escuchándolo.

Y entonces la dueña finalmente mira hacia ella.

Y sonríe con la misma calidez.

Dueña) “So…”

Señala hacia la calle.

Dueña) “…you’re the new neighbor.”

Kat asiente inmediatamente.

Kat) “Apparently.”

La mujer deja la carpeta sobre el mostrador.

Dueña) “Well then.”

Y luego, con absoluta naturalidad:

Dueña) “Welcome home, sweetheart.”

Y honestamente…

…la forma en que Kat se emociona al escucharlo deja clarísimo que sigue sin acostumbrarse a que la gente la reciba como persona normal y no como “la hija del presidente”.

Y así es como, tras otras dos horas de:

• muebles,
• colores,
• medidas,
• discusiones muy serias sobre sofás,
• y descubrir que Kat tiene opiniones sorprendentemente intensas sobre iluminación cálida…

…finalmente volvéis a Odenton.

Porque honestamente el día ya ha contenido suficientes eventos históricos para una sola jornada laboral.

Los Suburbans entran otra vez al campus USIC.

Y el contraste resulta rarísimo.

Hace apenas unas horas estabais:

• en el Tank,
• hablando con el JCS,
• diseñando ICIS,
• reuniéndoos con el SecNav,
• y reformando procedimientos federales.

Y ahora…

…volvéis con muestras de madera, catálogos de cocinas y un debate abierto sobre si el sofá gris “transmite agotamiento institucional.”

Kat, por supuesto, mantiene que sí.

Alex mantiene que eso no tiene ningún sentido.

Y Sarah, traidora absoluta, le ha dado la razón a Kat.

Cuando bajáis del vehículo, el campus ya está mucho más tranquilo.

El ritmo operativo de primera hora ha desaparecido.

Hay gente entrando y saliendo de edificios.

Cadetes.

Especialistas.

Algún oficial saludándoos al pasar.

Y Kat se queda observándolo unos segundos.

No como visitante.

Como alguien que vuelve a casa del trabajo.

Y eso sigue haciéndole ilusión.

Amy se acerca tranquilamente.

Amy) “Your residence security package is already installed, ma’am.”

Kat parpadea.

Kat) “…already?”

Amy asiente.

Amy) “USIC engineering and JSOC neighborhood support coordinated it while you were out.”

Alex murmura inmediatamente:

A) “This neighborhood genuinely functions like a hive mind.”

Tú asientes solemnemente.

Y) “Correct.”

Kat empieza a reírse otra vez.

Porque claro.

Por supuesto que mientras ella estaba comprando muebles:

• alguien ya había revisado sensores,
• comunicaciones,
• enlaces de emergencia,
• y rutas de evacuación.

Y probablemente Claire ya había dejado comida preparada en alguna parte también.

Cuando finalmente entráis otra vez en casa…

…Emily está en el salón con las niñas.

Todavía con ropa cómoda.

Todavía preciosa de esa forma tan cotidiana que a ti te sigue dejando completamente tonto.

Y en cuanto te ve entrar…

…sonríe inmediatamente.

Emily) “Honey.”

Y honestamente…

…después de todo el día: Pentágono, generales, secretarios, doctrina, agencias federales…

…esa sigue siendo probablemente tu parte favorita.

Tú cruzas el salón prácticamente en automático en cuanto ves a Emily.

Y la besas, por supuesto.

Con esa naturalidad tan vuestra.

Tan antigua ya.

Emily sonríe inmediatamente contra tus labios mientras una de las niñas protesta porque claramente considera que también merece atención prioritaria.

Emily) “Long day?”

Tú literalmente resoplas una risa cansada.

Y) “We may have accidentally created another federal agency.”

Emily ni pestañea ya.

Emily) “Again?”

Alex responde desde detrás mientras se deja caer en el sofá.

A) “It’s becoming an issue.”

Kat sigue todavía riéndose cuando Amy se acerca a revisar algo en la tablet junto a Hart.

Y entonces tú levantas un poco la voz hacia ambos.

Y) “Hey.”

Amy y Hart levantan inmediatamente la vista.

Y tú continúas tranquilamente:

Y) “Unless Kat has any issue with it…”

Miras un segundo hacia ella.

Kat ya está negando incluso antes de que termines.

Kat) “I absolutely do not.”

Tú asientes.

Y) “Don’t build two SCIFs.”

Silencio pequeño.

Amy parpadea una vez.

Hart también.

Y tú continúas como si fuera la decisión más lógica del planeta.

Y) “We can operate with one.”

Señalas vagamente entre ambas casas.

Y) “We are literally neighbors.”

Y) “…and we’re going to work together anyway.”

Amy tarda exactamente medio segundo en entender la implicación logística.

Amy) “Shared secure workspace.”

Hart ya está pensando operacionalmente.

Hart) “Reduces redundant hardening requirements.”

Tú asientes.

Y) “Exactly.”

Kat meanwhile parece completamente fascinada.

Kat) “You just casually merged our classified infrastructure.”

Alex murmura desde el sofá:

A) “This is basically how USIC keeps reproducing.”

Emily, que honestamente ya acepta cualquier cosa después de vivir contigo suficientes años, pregunta mientras acomoda a Ava:

Emily) “Is this one of those decisions that saves millions?”

Amy responde inmediatamente.

Amy) “Potentially, ma’am.”

Hart asiente.

Hart) “And significantly improves coordination latency.”

Kat se gira inmediatamente hacia ti con expresión divertida.

Kat) “You optimized friendship.”

Tú parpadeas un poco confundido.

Y) “I optimized walking distance.”

Eso hace que Alex literalmente se tape la cara con un cojín.

A) “He genuinely doesn’t realize he keeps building emotionally healthy infrastructure by accident.”

Hale, que acaba de entrar detrás con Sarah, responde inmediatamente:

Hl) “At this point I’m starting to suspect it’s strategic.”

Sarah meanwhile sonríe suavemente observando la escena.

Porque honestamente…

…la idea de dos vecinos construyendo un SCIF compartido para trabajar juntos en lugar de levantar estructuras separadas “por poder” o “por jerarquía” dice muchísimo sobre vosotros.

Y probablemente por eso Amy ya está enviando mensajes a ingeniería sin cuestionarlo siquiera.

Porque dentro del USIC…

…esa forma de pensar empieza a parecer completamente normal.

Kat, que estaba revisando algo en la tablet sentada junto a Emily en el sofá, levanta de pronto muchísimo la cabeza.

Kat) “Oh, Nacho, turn on CNN.”

Y lo dice emocionada.

Muy emocionada.

Tú coges el mando mientras Alex ya empieza a sonreír porque claramente sabe exactamente lo que viene.

La televisión se enciende.

Y el rótulo aparece inmediatamente en pantalla:

“Political Shockwave in Montana”

La música de última hora suena mientras aparece una periodista claramente sorprendida desde Washington.

CNN) “Good afternoon. We interrupt scheduled programming for what is rapidly becoming one of the most unexpected political developments of the election cycle.”

La pantalla cambia.

Imágenes de:

• gente haciendo cola,
• auditorios llenos,
• estudiantes,
• veteranos,
• trabajadores,
• y una joven morena hablando desde un escenario improvisado.

Margot.

La periodista continúa:

CNN) “A special Senate election in Montana has caught both major political parties almost completely off guard…”

La imagen muestra otra vez el nombre:

MARGOT ROBBINS - INDEPENDENT

CNN) “…as an independent candidate with virtually no traditional campaign infrastructure appears to have ignited what analysts are already describing as a generational political event.”

Kat literalmente se abraza un cojín emocionadísima.

Emily mira la pantalla fascinada.

Y tú… tú ya sabes exactamente por qué está pasando.

La periodista continúa:

CNN) “Robbins, who only recently became eligible to run for federal office due to age requirements, had not granted major interviews as of this morning…”

CNN) “…and yet has somehow already managed to organize two campaign rallies that exceeded venue capacity within hours.”

La imagen cambia otra vez.

Un gimnasio abarrotado.

Gente fuera.

Carteles hechos a mano.
