A) “…USIC will probably remain almost entirely intact when these people eventually reach power.”
Eso hace que varias miradas se desvíen inmediatamente hacia ti.
Alex continúa con absoluta honestidad intelectual.
A) “Including most of its command structure.”
El Chairman entrecierra ligeramente los ojos.
A) “Because Nacho built USIC from the exact same cultural resentment.”
Ahora sí el silencio vuelve a endurecerse.
Alex levanta una mano apenas, aclarando inmediatamente:

Te señala ligeramente.
A) “But the exhaustion with institutional inertia. The frustration with systems that stopped rewarding competence consistently.”
El CSA permanece completamente inmóvil escuchando.
A) “USIC exists because someone looked at the federal structure and thought: ‘this could function better.’”
Nadie puede negar eso.
Porque literalmente todos los presentes saben que es cierto.
Alex continúa.
A) “The difference is intent.”
Su tono baja ligeramente.
A) “These people often want replacement.”
Mira un segundo alrededor del Tank.

Eso sí cambia algo en la energía de la sala.

Niega ligeramente con la cabeza.
A) “It runs on responsibility obsession.”
Ahora incluso Hale, sentado al fondo con la tablet apoyada sobre la rodilla, levanta apenas una ceja.
A) “That’s why I think future administrations may actually like USIC.”
La CSAF interviene inmediatamente.
CSAF) “Explain.”
A) “Because USIC already solved culturally what they’ll spend decades trying to build politically.”
Eso provoca silencio otra vez.
A) “Highly competent people. Young leadership pipelines. Merit-heavy advancement. Operational adaptability. Long-term strategic thinking.”
Mira un momento hacia ti.
A) “But without abandoning institutional loyalty.”
El Chairman permanece observándote directamente ahora.
Alex continúa.
A) “That’s rare.”
Su voz vuelve a ganar firmeza.
A) “Most of the people I’m describing think institutions are obstacles to optimize around.”
Señala apenas hacia la mesa.
A) “USIC still believes institutions are worth protecting.”
Y entonces añade la frase que probablemente resume toda la diferencia.
A) “That’s why people here still like each other.”
El CNO suelta una pequeña exhalación casi divertida.
CNO) “Christ.”
Alex se encoge un poco de hombros.
A) “I’m serious.”
A) “At Georgetown people network vertically.”
Mira alrededor del Tank.
A) “USIC networks laterally.”
Ahora sí incluso el Chairman parece quedarse pensando unos segundos más de lo habitual.
Porque todos los presentes entienden la implicación profunda de esa diferencia cultural.

Alex gira apenas la cabeza hacia ti.

Ahora sí el Tank entero queda en un silencio diferente.
Mucho más personal.
Mucho más incómodo.
Alex continúa con la misma naturalidad analítica con la que ha hablado toda la mañana.

Busca las palabras exactas.
A) “…is that they would leave him operational freedom.”
El CNO levanta lentamente la vista.

A) “Because they see USIC as useful.”
La frase cae con una claridad brutal.

El Chairman te observa directamente ahora.

Alex sigue hablando antes de que nadie intervenga.

Eso genera varias reacciones pequeñas.

Luego añade algo todavía más incómodo.

Ahora sí Hale levanta lentamente la cabeza desde el fondo de la sala.
Porque esa frase cambia mucho las implicaciones.
Alex continúa.

Niega inmediatamente.
A) “That’s important.”

La palabra queda suspendida varios segundos.

El Chairman finalmente rompe el silencio.

Alex se pone un poco más recta automáticamente.
CJCS) “Do you understand that you just informed the Joint Chiefs of Staff that politically emergent elite ecosystems are already conducting long-term strategic personality assessments on sitting general officers?”
Alex parpadea una vez.
Y responde con una honestidad completamente desarmante.
A) “…I do now, sir.”
Y entonces el Commandant deja escapar una pequeña risa completamente agotada mientras se apoya hacia atrás.

Se pasa una mano por la cara.

El Chairman permanece completamente quieto.
A) “Most of them would probably be horrified if you described them as authoritarian.”
El CNO deja escapar una pequeña exhalación.
A) “And honestly?”
Se encoge apenas de hombros.
A) “Some of them are probably going to become genuinely excellent public servants.”
Eso desconcierta todavía más la sala.
Porque vuelve el problema mucho menos simple.
A) “The issue is that they increasingly think institutional legitimacy comes from competence…”

Nadie responde.
Porque todos entienden exactamente lo peligrosa que puede ser esa deriva cultural.
Alex continúa.

El CSAF asiente muy lentamente, casi para sí misma.

A) “Probably Columbia too. Maybe Chicago.”
El CNO murmura:

A) “Exactly.”
Alex junta las manos un momento delante de ella.
A) “The difference is Georgetown is directly adjacent to the federal apparatus.”
Ahora sí el Chairman vuelve a intervenir.
CJCS) “Meaning political incubation proximity.”
A) “Yes, sir.”
Su respuesta es inmediata.
A) “You can’t spend four years socially adjacent to congressional staffers, think tanks, federal agencies, donor ecosystems and media infrastructure without eventually internalizing the idea that governance is a solvable engineering problem.”
El silencio vuelve a caer.
Porque esa frase resume prácticamente toda la amenaza conceptual.
Y entonces Hale, que ha permanecido callado durante varios minutos, habla por primera vez desde el fondo de la sala.
Hart) “…And the terrifying part is that they’re going to outperform traditional politicians.”
Nadie le contradice.
Porque probablemente todos en la sala creen exactamente lo mismo.

El CNO levanta una ceja.
A) “They don’t even really need to destroy lobbying structures.”
Niega ligeramente con la cabeza.
A) “They just don’t respect them.”
La frase queda suspendida en mitad del Tank.
A) “The revolving-door model repulses them.”
Eso sí genera un silencio curioso.
Porque nadie esperaba exactamente eso.
A) “The whole idea of ‘help us now and someday there’ll be a lucrative consulting position waiting for you’…”
Hace una pequeña mueca.
A) “…they see that as intellectually cheap.”
El CSA permanece inmóvil escuchando.
A) “And if lobbying firms lose the ability to attract highly competent ambitious people…”
Mira alrededor de la mesa.

El Chairman interviene despacio.

Alex asiente inmediatamente.
A) “But this generation increasingly doesn’t define success that way.”
Ahora sí varias personas parecen genuinamente sorprendidas.
A) “That’s what I think older political analysts misunderstand.”
Mira un instante hacia Hale.
A) “A lot of these people genuinely want to serve.”
La frase cambia completamente la textura de la conversación otra vez.
Porque vuelve a romper la idea de corrupción clásica.
A) “Not perform service. Not monetize service.”
Niega ligeramente con la cabeza.
A) “Actually serve.”
El DHS liaison habla casi incrédulo.
DHS) “…Then why is this dangerous?”
Alex tarda un segundo en responder.
A) “Because conviction without humility scales badly.”
Silencio absoluto.
A) “Especially when combined with elite competence.”
Ahora sí incluso el Chairman parece quedarse pensativo de verdad.
Alex continúa.
A) “If you genuinely believe you are the most capable people available…”
Mira alrededor del Tank.
A) “…eventually democratic friction starts looking inefficient instead of necessary.”
El CMC deja escapar otra pequeña exhalación agotada.
CMC) “God help us.”
A) “And the problem is…”
Alex baja ligeramente la voz.
A) “…they’re probably going to improve some things.”
Nadie responde.
Porque esa posibilidad resulta muchísimo más inquietante que una amenaza abiertamente corrupta o incompetente.
A) “Faster staffing. Better coordination. Cleaner messaging. More coherent administrations.”
El CNO murmura por lo bajo:
CNO) “…Technocratic legitimacy replacing civic legitimacy.”
A) “Exactly, sir.”
Y durante unos segundos nadie en el Tank parece especialmente feliz de haber entendido perfectamente lo que acaba de decir una SPC de veintidós años.

A) “‘The boomers and old people screwing all of us over.’”
El silencio es absoluto.
A) “‘For God’s sake, half the economics faculty knows how to solve things the FED won’t solve because the Hill would rather kiss China’s ass than protect us.’”
La frase cae en el centro del Tank como una granada doctrinal.
Nadie parece escandalizado exactamente.
Más bien incómodamente consciente de haber oído variaciones de esa misma frustración antes.
Alex continúa.
A) “And honestly? Most of Georgetown broadly agrees with that sentiment.”
El CSAF levanta lentamente la vista.
A) “Even ROTC cadets.”
Eso sí genera reacción inmediata.
A) “Which is why I’m honestly surprised this briefing seems so unexpected.”
El CMC frunce ligeramente el ceño.
CMC) “You’re telling me ROTC cadets think like this too?”
A) “Not identically.”
Alex niega con la cabeza.
A) “ROTC still functions as a culturally semi-isolated group.”
Mira un instante hacia ti.
A) “There’s still institutional inertia there. Duty culture. Operational discipline.”
El CSA asiente muy lentamente.
A) “But…”
La palabra pesa bastante más que el resto.
A) “…there are already a lot of people inside DoD who think similarly.”
Ahora sí el silencio vuelve a endurecerse.
A) “They probably self-censor more.”
Mira alrededor del Tank.
A) “Because the DoD trains people very effectively to measure what they say.”
Una pequeña pausa.
A) “But not necessarily what they think.”
Nadie responde inmediatamente.
Porque todos los presentes saben perfectamente que eso también es verdad.
El Chairman se reclina lentamente hacia atrás en la silla.
CJCS) “…So what we’re potentially observing…”
Habla muy despacio.
CJCS) “…is not an anti-system movement.”
Alex responde sin vacilar.
A) “No, sir.”
El Chairman continúa.
CJCS) “…but a generational legitimacy transfer already underway beneath the visible political layer.”
Alex asiente.
A) “Yes, sir.”
Y entonces Hale, desde el fondo de la sala, murmura algo que deja al Tank entero en silencio otra vez.
Hart) “…And we only noticed because Georgetown accidentally recruited a logistics specialist with a conscience.”

La sala vuelve a quedar completamente quieta.
A) “It’s not like that.”
Mira directamente hacia él.
A) “You only noticed because someone willing to treat us like actual people went to Georgetown and did exactly that.”
Hale no responde inmediatamente.
Alex continúa.
A) “You still don’t understand.”
Niega ligeramente con la cabeza.
A) “I didn’t ‘switch sides.’”
La frase hace que varias personas levanten apenas la vista.
A) “Nobody feels like there are sides.”
Ahora sí el Tank entero escucha con atención absoluta.
A) “I’m saying my general asked me to explain what basically our entire generation already thinks.”
El Chairman permanece completamente inmóvil.
A) “This is not going to be dramatic.”
Su voz es casi calmada ahora.
A) “Nobody wants to overthrow Congress and send them all to Fort Leavenworth.”
Entonces hace una pequeña mueca.
A) “Well… almost nobody. There are crazy people everywhere.”
Eso provoca una reacción mínima en varias caras.
A) “But we also know how to deal with those people.”
Y entonces remata la frase que cambia otra vez la atmósfera entera de la sala.
A) “Pretty efficiently, actually.”
Silencio absoluto.
A) “Because we grew up being ignored as emotional teenagers.”
El CSA apoya lentamente ambas manos sobre la mesa.
Alex continúa.
A) “That’s why this feels strange to all of you.”
Mira alrededor del Tank.
A) “You think you just discovered an underground movement.”
Niega con la cabeza.
A) “You didn’t.”
La frase cae con una serenidad casi inquietante.
A) “You discovered that an entire generation has already spent years discussing governance, institutions, economics, media ecosystems and political legitimacy…”

A) “…and nobody important ever bothered listening carefully enough.”
El CNO permanece completamente callado ahora.
Alex continúa.
A) “That’s why Nacho going to Georgetown mattered.”
La sala vuelve a mirar hacia ti.
A) “Not because he recruited people.”
Niega inmediatamente.
A) “Because he listened without treating us like children.”
Ahora sí incluso Hale parece quedarse quieto de verdad.
A) “That’s rare.”
El Chairman finalmente interviene, muy despacio.
CJCS) “…Specialist.”
Alex se pone un poco más recta automáticamente.
CJCS) “Are you telling this room that the future governing class of the United States already possesses a coherent political self-awareness?”
Alex tarda apenas un segundo en responder.
A) “Yes, sir.”
Silencio absoluto.
A) “And most of them still believe they’re trying to save the country.”

Nadie se mueve.
Alex gira apenas la cabeza hacia ti.
A) “Just one with more ethical self-awareness than most.”
El comentario provoca pequeñas reacciones inevitables en varias caras del JCS.
No exactamente diversión.
Más bien reconocimiento incómodo.
A) “One of us who already has enough institutional power and enough civic conscience to stop and say…”
Su voz cambia ligeramente, imitándote casi sin darse cuenta.
A) “‘Hey. This is serious. Let’s call the people above us.’”
Mira alrededor de la mesa.
A) “…or in Nacho’s case, apparently his peers.”
Eso sí arranca una pequeña exhalación cansada del CNO.
A) “Because the federal system is missing an enormous amount of information.”
La frase queda suspendida varios segundos.
Y entonces, por primera vez desde que empezó el briefing, Alex parece recordar plenamente dónde está.
Mira hacia ti.
Y de pronto vuelve a parecer una chica de veintidós años sentada en una sala imposible.
A) “…Sorry, Nacho.”
Baja apenas la voz.
A) “I hope I didn’t just destroy your career.”
El Tank entero queda completamente inmóvil.
Porque todos entienden perfectamente lo que acaba de pasar.
Una SPC acaba de declarar implícitamente que un BG miembro del JCS comparte rasgos culturales generacionales con las élites políticas emergentes que podrían redefinir el gobierno federal en veinte años.
Y tú respondes sin la más mínima duda.
Y) “Don’t worry, Alex.”
Tu tono es tranquilo. Limpio. Absolutamente firme.
Y) “If this conversation can destroy my career…”
La sala entera te observa ahora.
Y) “…then my career was never worth what any of us thought it was.”
Silencio absoluto.
El Chairman no aparta la mirada de ti.
El CNO baja lentamente la vista.
Incluso Hale deja de escribir.
Porque nadie en esa sala interpreta esa frase como retórica.
La interpretan exactamente como lo que es:
La declaración de principios de alguien que acaba de escoger conscientemente la honestidad institucional por encima de su propia supervivencia profesional.
Y durante unos segundos, el Tank entero parece entender perfectamente por qué una generación entera podría haber decidido que Ignacio Pindado era “uno de los suyos”… incluso llevando estrellas en el uniforme.

Nadie contradice eso.
Porque sería absurdo hacerlo.
Alex asiente inmediatamente.
A) “That’s exactly what I’m trying to explain to you.”

A) “Nobody wants to burn the country down.”
La frase sale con una claridad absoluta.
A) “Well…”
Hace una pequeña mueca.
A) “…except maybe China and Russia.”
Eso provoca varias exhalaciones contenidas y algún gesto resignado alrededor de la mesa.
A) “Pretty much the entire country is exhausted with both of them.”
El representante DHS asiente apenas, casi involuntariamente.
A) “And angry at political leadership for not responding more aggressively.”
Mira hacia el Chairman.
A) “That’s not generational.”
Luego hacia el resto del JCS.
A) “And it’s definitely not just inside DoD.”
Su tono sigue siendo completamente analítico.
A) “That’s just the general sentiment.”
El CSA cruza lentamente los brazos.
CSA) “…Strategic exhaustion.”
A) “Yes, sir.”
Alex asiente inmediatamente.
A) “Most people under forty grew up watching endless economic dependence on geopolitical rivals, endless procedural paralysis and endless institutional caution.”
El CNO murmura por lo bajo:
CNO) “And now they think caution itself became weakness.”
A) “Exactly.”
Alex continúa.
A) “And again… I need to stress this.”
Mira alrededor del Tank.
A) “Most of these people are not radicals.”
La frase vuelve a aparecer como un martillo conceptual.
A) “They genuinely believe they are trying to preserve the Republic.”
El Chairman permanece completamente inmóvil.
A) “They just increasingly believe the current political architecture is too slow, too performative and too compromised by short-term electoral incentives to respond effectively to strategic competitors.”
Eso sí hace que varias personas del JCS intercambien miradas incómodamente conscientes.
Porque todos allí han pensado alguna versión de eso alguna vez.
Alex sigue hablando.
