Por primera vez en mucho tiempo, llegas al PDB sin haber revisado tres crisis simultáneas antes de desayunar.

Y, para ser honestos, se nota.

Kat está radiante.

Tú también.

La noticia del embarazo sigue siendo demasiado reciente como para que ninguno de los dos haya terminado de procesarla del todo.

Y además están los caballos.

Y los terrenos.

Y los planos.

Y esa sensación extraña de que, por una vez, el futuro parece avanzar más deprisa que los problemas.

Mark ya está en el Despacho Oval cuando llegáis.

Todavía faltan unos minutos para que empiecen a entrar los demás.

Así que el ambiente es tranquilo.

Casi familiar.

Katherine se acerca directamente a él.

K) “Thank you very much for the horses, Dad.”

Mark levanta la vista de unos documentos.

POTUS) “You’re welcome.”

K) “It was really thoughtful.”

POTUS) “I maintain I was ambushed.”

Katherine sonríe.

K) “A successful negotiation is still a negotiation.”

POTUS) “That’s not how negotiations work.”

K) “It is if you win.”

POTUS) “You’re a lawyer.”

K) “Correct.”

POTUS) “I should have seen this coming.”

K) “You really should have.”

Mark la observa unos segundos.

Luego niega con la cabeza.

Pero está sonriendo.

Porque verla así de feliz resulta complicado de ignorar.

POTUS) “You know, most daughters ask for jewelry.”

K) “Jewelry doesn’t gallop.”

POTUS) “That’s an excellent point.”

Y) “She’s had that argument prepared for years.”

K) “Decades.”

POTUS) “You’re twenty-three.”

K) “Exactly.”

Ahora sí, Mark se ríe.

Y durante unos segundos la observa.

Con calma.

Como un padre.

Porque también él ve lo evidente.

La diferencia.

La tranquilidad.

La felicidad.

La forma en que Katherine parece haberse quitado un peso invisible de encima.

Y probablemente también ve algo más.

La mano que, casi sin darse cuenta, vuelve una y otra vez hacia su vientre.

Todavía plano.

Todavía imposible de distinguir.

Pero ya real.

Muy real.

POTUS) “How are you feeling?”

K) “Wonderful.”

POTUS) “Any symptoms?”

K) “Not really.”

Y) “She’s smiling more.”

K) “That’s because I’m happy.”

POTUS) “Fair.”

Mark te mira entonces.

Y tarda aproximadamente medio segundo en detectar que tú tampoco estás precisamente sufriendo.

POTUS) “And you?”

Y) “Also wonderful.”

POTUS) “I noticed.”

Y) “Subtle?”

POTUS) “Not remotely.”

Katherine se ríe.

Porque es verdad.

Llevas dos días con la misma expresión.

La expresión de alguien que sigue sin terminar de creerse su propia suerte.

POTUS) “Good.”

La palabra sale sencilla.

Sincera.

Y durante unos segundos nadie añade nada más.

Porque no hace falta.

La puerta del Despacho Oval empieza a abrirse.

Llegan los primeros miembros del equipo de seguridad nacional.

Los primeros asesores.

Los primeros documentos clasificados del día.

El trabajo vuelve a llamar.

Pero esta vez es diferente.

Porque, por primera vez en mucho tiempo, cuando el Presidente observa a su general más temido y a su hija sentados juntos en el sofá del Despacho Oval, los ve completamente incapaces de ocultar lo felices que son.

Y sospecha que, por una vez, eso puede ser incluso más importante que cualquier cosa que aparezca en el PDB de aquella mañana.

La reunión termina poco después de las ocho.

Los asesores recogen carpetas.

Los oficiales abandonan la estancia.

Los miembros del equipo de seguridad nacional regresan a sus respectivos despachos.

Y, poco a poco, el Despacho Oval recupera esa calma extraña que sólo existe entre reuniones.

Mark está terminando de revisar unos documentos cuando descubre que ninguno de vosotros se mueve.

Ni Katherine.

Ni tú.

Lo cual suele ser una mala señal.

POTUS) “Why do I feel like I’m about to regret this?”

Katherine sonríe inmediatamente.

K) “Because experience is a wonderful teacher.”

Mark deja el bolígrafo sobre la mesa.

POTUS) “Proceed.”

Tú tomas aire.

Y) “We need clarifications.”

POTUS) “That’s never a good opening.”

K) “We have many.”

Y) “A worrying number.”

Mark os señala alternativamente.

POTUS) “Go on.”

Tú adoptas una expresión perfectamente seria.

Y) “We’ve discovered that, when given free time, we work more than when we’re actually working.”

Durante unos segundos hay silencio.

Mark parpadea.

Una vez.

Luego otra.

POTUS) “What?”

Katherine asiente con absoluta solemnidad.

K) “Technically it was horse acquisition, not work.”

Y) “A distinction without practical value.”

K) “Nevertheless, Nacho is right.”

POTUS) “I hate where this is going.”

Katherine sonríe.

K) “He usually is.”

Y) “Usually?”

K) “Fine.”

Se vuelve hacia ti.

K) “Practically always.”

Y) “Thank you.”

K) “You’re welcome.”

Y entonces añade, completamente seria:

K) “Although I should point out that his success rate is annoyingly high.”

Y) “That’s because I always have reason.”

K) “And because you’re incapable of doing things halfway.”

Y) “Also true.”

La conversación parece haber abandonado cualquier pretensión de profesionalidad.

Algo que, curiosamente, ya no sorprende demasiado a Mark.

Katherine se acerca.

Toma tu mano.

Y te da un beso.

Un gesto sencillo.

Natural.

La clase de gesto que ambos hacéis sin pensar.

Tu mano termina sobre su vientre casi por reflejo.

Y ella coloca la suya encima.

Todavía no hay nada visible.

Todavía no hay cambios físicos.

Pero para ambos resulta imposible ignorarlo.

Porque ya no es una posibilidad.

Es una realidad.

Mark contempla la escena durante unos segundos.

Luego suspira.

POTUS) “You know…”

K) “Hmm?”

POTUS) “Most people wait longer before becoming completely insufferable.”

Katherine rompe a reír.

Y tú también.

POTUS) “You’ve known for two days.”

Y) “Three.”

K) “Two and a half.”

POTUS) “Whatever.”

Señala la mano de Katherine.

Luego la tuya.

POTUS) “You’re already acting like expectant parents in a toothpaste commercial.”

Katherine se apoya ligeramente contra ti.

K) “We are expectant parents.”

POTUS) “Unfortunately, that’s a very solid argument.”

Durante unos segundos vuelve a reinar la tranquilidad.

Hasta que tú recuperas el hilo principal.

Y) “Back to the original issue.”

POTUS) “There was an original issue?”

Y) “Yes.”

K) “The free time.”

Y) “You told us to slow down.”

POTUS) “Correct.”

Y) “Objectively speaking, we accelerated.”

POTUS) “Catastrophically.”

Katherine asiente.

K) “That’s fair.”

POTUS) “You bought horses.”

K) “Two.”

POTUS) “Don’t help.”

Y) “In our defense, they were excellent horses.”

POTUS) “Again, not helping.”

Ahora incluso Mark está luchando por no reírse.

Porque, por absurda que sea la conversación, todos sabéis que es cierta.

Os dio tiempo libre.

Y vuestra reacción fue construir media vida futura en menos de veinticuatro horas.

Finalmente el Presidente se reclina en su asiento.

Observándoos.

A los dos.

A Katherine radiante.

A ti igual de feliz.

Y a esa energía extraña que ambos desprendéis desde que recibisteis la noticia.

POTUS) “I think I understand the problem.”

Y) “Good.”

K) “Excellent.”

POTUS) “The problem is that I assumed slowing down would reduce your productivity.”

Y) “Reasonable assumption.”

POTUS) “Clearly incorrect.”

K) “Very.”

POTUS) “What actually happened is that I removed work.”

Y) “Correct.”

POTUS) “Leaving you free to pursue projects.”

K) “Correct.”

POTUS) “And apparently your preferred project is building a family civilization in Odenton.”

La carcajada de Katherine es inmediata.

K) “That sounds wonderful.”

Y) “It really does.”

Mark os observa unos segundos más.

Y acaba negando con la cabeza.

Porque ya sabe que ha perdido.

POTUS) “Fine.”

Y) “Fine?”

POTUS) “The clarification is this.”

K) “We’re listening.”

POTUS) “When I told you to slow down, I meant government work.”

Y Katherine se ilumina inmediatamente.

Tú también.

Lo que provoca que Mark se arrepienta de la frase en tiempo real.

POTUS) “Oh no.”

K) “Oh yes.”

Y) “That changes everything.”

POTUS) “That’s exactly the response I was afraid of.”

Y por la expresión triunfal que aparece simultáneamente en vuestras caras, queda bastante claro que el Presidente de los Estados Unidos acaba de cometer otro error táctico importante.

Katherine sigue claramente satisfecha con la aclaración presidencial.

Demasiado satisfecha.

Lo suficiente como para que Mark ya esté arrepentido.

POTUS) “No.”

K) “Hear me out.”

POTUS) “Absolutely not.”

Katherine ya está contando con los dedos.

K) “With free time, we spend money.”

Y) “That’s true.”

K) “Quite a lot of money, apparently.”

Y) “Also true.”

K) “We’re probably going to need to diversify into the private sector.”

POTUS) “Katie.”

Y tú, como buen compañero de crimen, decides contribuir.

Y) “Fortunately, we seem to be reasonably good investors.”

Katherine asiente inmediatamente.

K) “Reasonably?”

Y) “Fair.”

K) “We’re very good.”

Luego se queda pensativa.

Lo cual nunca es una buena señal.

POTUS) “No.”

K) “I haven’t said anything yet.”

POTUS) “I know that look.”

K) “Honey.”

Y) “Hmm?”

K) “We’re good at different things.”

Y) “True.”

K) “You’re good at law.”

Y) “Among other things.”

K) “Emily is spectacular at medicine.”

Katherine se ilumina.

Silencio.

Mark cierra los ojos.

Lentamente.

POTUS) “Katie.”

K) “What?”

POTUS) “No.”

K) “I haven’t even pitched it.”

POTUS) “No.”

K) “There wasn’t even a slide deck.”

POTUS) “Katie.”

K) “Fine.”

Sonríe.

K) “It was a joke.”

K) “Mostly.”

K) “Okay, okay.”

Ahora sí rompe a reír.

Porque incluso ella sabe que está provocándolo.

K) “The point is that apparently our natural pace when we’re not allowed to work is…”

Mira hacia ti.

Mark apoya ambos codos sobre la mesa.

Y por primera vez parece genuinamente tranquilo.

Y eso la hace pensar unos segundos.

Porque, para ser sinceros, tiene razón.

Kat mira hacia ti.

Y luego vuelve a mirar a su padre.

Y) “To be fair, she’s not entirely wrong.”

POTUS) “General.”

Y) “Mr. President.”

POTUS) “Stop helping.”

Y tú te encoges de hombros.

Porque, en realidad, la escena tiene algo divertido.

Porque Mark está imaginando una espiral de gasto incontrolable.

Y todos los presentes saben que el verdadero problema nunca ha sido ese.

El dinero nunca os ha interesado especialmente.

Lo que os interesa son los proyectos.

Las ideas.

Las personas.

Las cosas que construyen algo.

Una escuela.

Una unidad.

Una familia.

Y eso es precisamente lo que hace que Katherine sonría mientras vuelve a entrelazar sus dedos con los tuyos.

POTUS) “I’m afraid to ask.”

K) “I think we’re just nesting.”

El silencio dura un segundo.

Y luego Mark empieza a reírse.

Porque, por ridícula que suene la explicación…

Probablemente sea exactamente eso.

La conversación ha alcanzado ese punto en el que ya nadie está completamente seguro de si está hablando en serio o no.

Lo cual, en vuestro caso, suele ser peligroso.

Mark te mira inmediatamente con desconfianza.

POTUS) “No.”

Y) “I haven’t asked anything yet.”

POTUS) “Experience.”

Katherine asiente.

K) “Fair.”

Y) “Can we work?”

K) “That.”

Mark os observa unos segundos.

Luego se reclina en la silla.

POTUS) “For God’s sake.”

POTUS) “Yes.”

POTUS) “Yes, you can work.”

Y Katherine se ilumina.

K) “Excellent.”

POTUS) “Nobody forbade you from working.”

Y) “That’s not entirely how it sounded.”

POTUS) “It is exactly how it sounded.”

Y) “Interesting.”

Señala hacia vosotros.

POTUS) “What we forbade was whatever it is you two were doing before.”

K) “Being productive?”

POTUS) “Being six people each.”

Y eso os hace reír a ambos.

Porque, objetivamente, tiene razón.

Pero tú sigues pensando.

Y eso nunca es buena señal.

Mark cierra los ojos.

Y) “Like, genuinely fun.”

Y respondéis prácticamente al mismo tiempo.

Los tres os quedáis callados un segundo.

Porque ahí está el verdadero problema.

Katherine asiente.

Porque entiende perfectamente el argumento.

Mark permanece pensativo unos segundos.

Y eso os hace prestar atención.

Porque ahora sí habla en serio.

Señala hacia vosotros.

Y por la sonrisa que aparece en la cara de Mark, queda bastante claro que sí lo sabe.

Que dentro de seis meses probablemente seguirá teniendo exactamente el mismo problema.

Entonces surge una pregunta evidente.

Katherine reacciona instantáneamente.

Luego te observa a ti.

Y niega lentamente con la cabeza.

Mark reconoce esa expresión.

Y empieza a arrepentirse.

Aun así, decide intentarlo una vez más.

Señala hacia vosotros.

POTUS) “Just maybe.”

Katherine ya está sonriendo.

POTUS) “You could try the FBI Director.”

Tú parpadeas.

Y) “Oh.”

K) “We know him.”

Y) “Great guy.”

K) “Very.”

Y) “He helped us a lot when we stood up USIC.”

POTUS) “Of course he did.”

Y) “The HRT-style certification process for the QRFs.”

Mark se masajea el puente de la nariz.

Katherine ya está riéndose.

Porque sabe perfectamente lo que viene.

Y) “Oh, don’t worry.”

POTUS) “I am already worried.”

Y) “He recovered.”

POTUS) “Recovered from what?”

Y) “From the conversation.”

POTUS) “Nacho.”

Y) “What?”

POTUS) “What conversation?”

Tú adoptas una expresión inocente.

Y) “I may have reminded him of several definitions.”

Katherine se tapa la boca.

Porque está a punto de romper a reír.

POTUS) “Definitions.”

Y) “Improper conduct.”

Y) “Public intoxication.”

POTUS) “…”

Y) “Harassment.”

POTUS) “…”

Katherine ya está llorando de risa.

K) “Honey.”

Mark ya parece temer la respuesta.

K) “Magnificently.”

Y) “He became much more professional.”

Katherine ya ni siquiera intenta contenerse.

K) “He sobered up from sheer terror.”

POTUS) “Katie.”

K) “Dad.”

POTUS) “Exaggeration?”

K) “A little.”

Mira hacia ti.

Y sonríe.

K) “Not much.”

Y) “It wasn’t that bad.”

K) “Honey.”

K) “You started inventing prison sentences.”

POTUS) “You what?”

Y) “Only approximately.”

POTUS) “Approximately?”

Y) “I was improvising.”

POTUS) “Nacho.”

Y) “Sir.”

POTUS) “You threatened my National Security Advisor with fictional jail time.”

Y) “In fairness, I never actually threatened him.”

K) “No.”

POTUS) “Katie?”

K) “He just started reciting consequences in a very calm voice.”

Y) “It’s an important distinction.”

K) “The terrifying part was how calm he was.”

Mark os observa a ambos.

A Katherine completamente divertida.

A ti absolutamente convencido de que aquello había sido razonable.

Y finalmente deja escapar una carcajada.

Porque, de repente, comprende algo.

POTUS) “You know what the problem is?”

K) “What?”

POTUS) “You’ve somehow convinced yourselves you’re normal.”

Y tú y Katherine os miráis.

Reflexionáis un segundo.

Y respondéis al mismo tiempo.

Y) “We are.”

K) “We are.”

Mark vuelve a echarse hacia atrás en la silla.

Derrotado.

Porque, claramente, esa batalla la perdió hace mucho tiempo.

Mark todavía está recuperándose de la conversación anterior cuando tú vuelves al problema original.

Porque, en realidad, la cuestión sigue sin resolverse.

Y) “Mark.”

POTUS) “I’m already concerned.”

Y) “This isn’t The Sims.”

El Presidente se queda inmóvil.

POTUS) “What?”

Y) “Friendship isn’t something you create once.”

Katherine ya está asintiendo.

Porque sabe exactamente hacia dónde vas.

Y) “You don’t max out the relationship bar and then move on.”

POTUS) “Relationship bar.”

Y) “Yes.”

K) “Fair.”

Y) “You maintain it.”

Y) “You invest time.”

Y) “You stay in touch.”

Y) “You keep showing up.”

Y) “Otherwise it fades.”

Mark os observa unos segundos.

Porque, debajo de la referencia absurda, el argumento es bastante sólido.

Y) “We know a lot of people.”

K) “A lot.”

Y) “We like most of them.”

K) “Most of them are genuinely good people.”

Y) “But we can’t do networking by weight.”

Mark parpadea.

POTUS) “By weight?”

Katherine gira la cabeza.

K) “By weight?”

Y) “Like at a fish market.”

Ahora sí.

Katherine entiende inmediatamente.

K) “Oh.”

Y) “You can’t just collect people.”

K) “Right.”

Y) “Relationships don’t work that way.”

K) “No.”

Se vuelve hacia su padre.

K) “We can’t, Dad.”

Y) “There’s a limit.”

K) “At some point they’re either friends or they’re not.”

Y) “And if they’re friends, you actually have to care.”

K) “Which takes time.”

Y) “And attention.”

K) “And lunches.”

Y) “Many lunches.”

POTUS) “Amazing.”

K) “What?”

POTUS) “You’ve somehow turned lunch into a strategic doctrine.”

Y) “Because it is.”

K) “It kind of is.”

Mark deja escapar una carcajada.

Porque, para su desgracia, también entiende exactamente a qué os referís.

La razón por la que Margot escucha vuestras ideas.

La razón por la que Noah y Paul os llaman.

La razón por la que media ciudad parece responder cuando necesitáis algo.

No es poder.

No es rango.

No es influencia.

Es tiempo.

Años de tiempo.

Años de aparecer cuando no hacía falta.

De ayudar cuando no había beneficio.

De llamar simplemente porque sí.

Finalmente el Presidente asiente lentamente.

POTUS) “Okay.”

Y) “Okay?”

POTUS) “That’s actually a useful distinction.”

K) “Thank you.”

POTUS) “You’re not networking.”

Y) “Exactly.”

K) “We’re maintaining relationships.”

POTUS) “Which is annoyingly healthier.”

Y sonríes.

Porque ésa era precisamente la idea.

Entonces Mark os señala con el dedo.

POTUS) “Fine.”

POTUS) “Here’s your assignment.”

Katherine se endereza teatralmente.

K) “Yes, Mr. President.”

POTUS) “Call people.”

Y) “Done.”

POTUS) “Have lunches.”

K) “Done.”

POTUS) “Have dinners.”

Y) “Done.”

POTUS) “Visit people.”

K) “Done.”

POTUS) “But if either of you comes back next week having accidentally founded a company, acquired a ranch, expanded USIC or annexed part of Maryland…”

Katherine ya está riéndose.

Y tú también.

POTUS) “I’m counting it as work.”

Y) “That’s fair.”

K) “Reasonable.”

POTUS) “And I’m serious.”

K) “So are we.”

Mark os mira.

A los dos.

Y, por la expresión que pone, queda bastante claro que no le tranquiliza absolutamente nada que lo digáis con tanta sinceridad.
